A completely honest guide to sustainable fashion (from people who actually do it)

Right. Let's talk about sustainable fashion. Properly. Without the buzzwords, the carbon-offset smoke and mirrors, or the suspiciously vague promises about "our commitment to a greener future."

We're Randy Cow. We've been making premium sustainable clothing from recycled materials for six years. We've been in British GQ. We've shown at New York and Miami Fashion Weeks. We went on Dragons' Den, which was terrifying, and we survived, which was gratifying.

More importantly: we've had six years of conversations with customers who genuinely want to make better choices and have absolutely no idea who to believe. Because the fashion industry, bless it, has made "sustainable" mean almost nothing.

So here's our completely honest guide. No jargon. No greenwashing. One or two cow puns - we can't help ourselves.

First: why "sustainable fashion" has become almost meaningless

Here's a thing that happens a lot. A large fast fashion brand launches a new range. It's called something like "Conscious Collection" or "EcoEdit" or, our personal favourite, "Better Futures." It features maybe 50 items made with some recycled polyester. The brand puts it front and centre in their marketing.

Meanwhile, the other 4,950 items in their range are made exactly as they always were. The supply chain hasn't changed. The production volumes haven't dropped. The business model - make loads, sell cheap, encourage people to buy more - is completely intact.

This is greenwashing. And it's everywhere.

"Sustainable fashion" has been claimed by so many brands doing so little that the phrase itself has lost most of its meaning. Which is enormously frustrating if you're actually trying to do it properly.
We're not saying this to be pious. We're saying it because if you're trying to make genuinely better choices, you deserve to know what you're actually buying.

So what does sustainable fashion actually mean?

In honest terms, genuinely sustainable fashion tries to reduce its environmental impact across the whole lifecycle of a garment. That means thinking about:
  • What the fabric is made from - recycled materials, organic fibres, or other lower-impact alternatives to virgin synthetic or conventional cotton
  • How it's made - where, by whom, under what conditions, using how much water and energy
  • How long it lasts - a well-made piece worn 200 times is dramatically more sustainable than a cheap piece worn 8 times, even if the cheap one has a recycled label on it
  • What happens at the end of its life - can it be recycled, composted, or repurposed?

No brand is perfect across all of these. The honest ones will tell you that. If a brand claims to have completely solved sustainability, read the small print very carefully.

What we do at Randy Cow: Every product uses recycled or sustainably sourced materials. We design for longevity - because a piece that lasts is a piece that doesn't need replacing. And we're members of 1% for the Planet, which means at least 1% of our annual revenue (not profit - revenue) goes to vetted environmental nonprofits. Every year, no exceptions. It's built into how the business works, not bolted on as an afterthought.


The five questions worth asking any "sustainable" brand

After six years of doing this, here are the questions that separate genuine commitment from clever marketing:

  1. What percentage of your range is sustainable? A brand with one eco collection and ten conventional ones isn't a sustainable brand. It's a conventional brand with a sustainability side project.
  2. What certifications do you actually have? Certifications like 1% for the Planet, GRS (Global Recycle Standard), or B Corp are independently verified. "We're committed to sustainability" is not a certification - it's a sentence anyone can write.
  3. How long is this made to last? This one barely gets asked, and it might be the most important. Fast fashion and sustainable fashion are fundamentally incompatible. If a brand is releasing new collections every few weeks, the sustainability claims need scrutiny regardless of the materials.
  4. Can you tell me where this was made? Supply chain transparency matters. A brand that can tell you specifically where and how their products are made has thought about this seriously. A brand that responds with "we work with trusted partners" - perhaps less so.
  5. What happens to it when I'm done with it? Very few brands have a good answer to this. The ones that do have genuinely thought about sustainability as a system rather than a marketing point.

The uncomfortable truth about price

We're going to say something that sustainable fashion brands sometimes shy away from: doing this properly costs more. Not a fortune. But more.

Recycled and sustainable materials cost more than the cheapest conventional alternatives. Designing for longevity means not cutting corners on construction. Giving 1% of revenue to environmental causes means building that into your pricing from day one.

The flip side - and this is the argument we genuinely believe - is cost per wear. A £15 t-shirt worn 8 times before it falls apart costs £1.88 per wear. A £55 t-shirt worn 150 times costs 37p per wear, looks better the whole time, and didn't end up in landfill after two months.

Sustainable fashion isn't expensive. Cheap fashion that you keep replacing is expensive. It's just spread out in a way that's easier not to notice.
We're not saying everyone can afford to buy this way - that's a real constraint and it would be dishonest to dismiss it. But for those who do have the choice, the maths is worth doing.

What actually makes a difference as a consumer

The good news: you don't need to overhaul your entire wardrobe or become a sustainability evangelist. Small, consistent choices add up more than one dramatic gesture.

Buy less, more deliberately. Ask "will I still want this in three years?" before buying anything. Wash clothes less often and at lower temperatures - it extends their life dramatically. When you do buy, look for the certifications above. Support brands that are genuinely transparent about what they're doing.

And - if you'll allow us a small moment of self-promotion - consider buying from brands like ours, who've been building this properly for six years and have the slightly terrifying Dragons' Den footage to prove it.

One last thing

The fashion industry isn't going to fix itself overnight. The economics still reward volume and speed, and that won't change until enough consumers and enough regulation push back on it.

But the direction of travel is right. Customers are more informed. Greenwashing is harder to sustain. The brands that built genuine sustainability into their foundations - rather than bolting it on as a marketing layer - are in a much stronger position than they were six years ago when we started.

We're genuinely optimistic. We're also genuinely committed to calling out the nonsense when we see it, because the customers who care about this deserve better than vague promises and suspiciously small eco ranges.
